What does AMI stand for?

AMI stands for Advanced Metering Infrastructure.

What is AMI?

AMI consists of smart, digital utility meters which communicate automatically with an always-operational data network such as the commercial cellular network. This allows meter readings to be uploaded automatically to the meter vendor’s data services.

How is AMI useful for water meters?

AMI eliminates the need for manual meter reads or drive-by meter reads. By transmitting meter reads automatically, water consumption is read every day, rather than monthly – assuming there is manpower available to perform the manual reads.

Which networks do Metron’s water meters use?

Metron’s water meters upload water consumption data over cellular networks operated by Verizon or AT&T.

How reliable is AMI?

Very reliable, with almost all meters uploading nightly. Utilities and real estate operators can quickly see if there are any meters which did not transmit, and can investigate the cause.

If a cell tower is down, does the meter lose water consumption data?

No. Metron’s meters can store detailed water consumption data for up to 45 days if it’s not possible to transmit. When the transmission eventually happens, all of that backlogged data is uploaded, and the usage history is automatically filled in in WaterScope.

Does a cellular-connected meter pose a health risk?

No. Metron’s meters transmit data for about 15 seconds every 24 hours! Compare that with a cellphone, which is transmitting frequently, and is located much closer to the user’s body.

Where does the water consumption data go to?

Metron’s meters upload data to WaterScope®, which is Metron’s water data management system (MDMS). Utilities, real estate operators and end users can see their detailed water consumption the next morning by going online to WaterScope.

Is my data secure?

Yes. All transmissions from Metron’s meters to the cloud are encrypted and sent through a Virtual Private Network (VPN).
